When I was a child, I kept a single silkworm as a pet—a tiny, adorable creature with a magical ability to spin layers of shimmering threads around itself. Each day, I’d feed it a single mulberry leaf and watch in pure adoration as it munched away, then began weaving a cocoon that glowed in sunlight. Those iridescent fibers, were spun so gently,  bending and reflecting every beam of light in the room, creating a soft glow that felt both otherworldly and oddly comforting to my young self.

I remember sitting quietly, day after day, anticipating the silkworm’s transformation. It was like witnessing a secret ballet behind a veil of translucent silk—intricate yet effortless. My childhood self imagined the silkworm in deep slumber within its diaphanous fortress, snoring away in the comfort of its cocoon. And then came the heartbreak: learning that in the traditional silk-making process, these tiny beings are often boiled alive before they can emerge from their cocoons, robbing them of their moment to finally spread their wings.

As a little girl, that realization gave me nightmares. The wonder I felt at the silkworm’s delicate artistry was overshadowed by the cruelty lingering behind each strand of gleaming silk. And so the seed of an idea was planted: there must be a way to capture the same silken grace without harming a single living creature.

That idea blossomed into our TENCEL™ duvet collection.
